Where a property has been subject to a serious blaze; the owners are often left with the daunting fact that the need to repair both the fire damage as well as flood damage. This is because the fire service has to use large quantities of water to stop the blaze, which can mean that there is lots of standing water left over. It is important that you understand completely the risks that you may face when undertaking your own fire and flood restoration.

A shock to the system

The first and most lethal risk that should be considered when undertaking fire and flood restoration is electrocution. The damage that is caused by fire can frequently leave electrics exposed. When you add the presence of water you suddenly have a combination that can pose a serious health risk.

Toxic risks

The possibility that there could be unseen toxins in the air is the next factor you must consider if attempting your own fire and flood restoration. First there is the chance that toxic mold may have gathered in hidden areas following flooding, which can prove dangerous to humans. Then there is also the possibility that toxic fumes could still remain in the furnishings and fabric of the building following the burning of certain materials.

Structural integrity

The final risk that must always be kept in mind is the damage that can be sustained by the physical structure of a building that has suffered from fire and flood damage. Either fire or flooding on their own have the capability to cause walls and floors to become unsafe. Adding the two factors together only serves to multiply the chances of walls collapsing and floors falling through.

The safest option

Anyone looking at undertaking their own fire and flood restoration should seriously consider employing a specialist service to carry out the work. In most circumstances the cost of hiring a fire and flood restoration team will be covered by building insurance. So is it really worth placing yourself in danger when you can leave it to specially trained teams that have all the right equipment?

Record Snow Pack In Utah May Lead To Flooding And Water Damage
It’s Not Too Late To Get Flood Insurance

Salt Lake City, Utah, 4/27/2011 — The snow pack in most of Utah is greater than the levels at the same time in 1983, the year of the infamous floods. This condition does not insure that there will be wide spread flooding, but if the weather continues to be wet and cold adding to the snow pack, the sudden temperature raise can cause the runoff to be very high. Another contributing factor is the water soaked ground. When the ground is soaked, it is unable to absorb the additional runoff.

Also, when the ground is soaked, the pressure from the ground water is finding it’s way into many basements that have not had water problems before. Ground water is hard to “turn off”. A sump pump is the common method of dealing with ground water problems. If your neighbors have sump pumps and you don’t, you may want to consider getting one, fast! If the water is already coming into your basement, deal with the water damage the best you can while you scramble to have a sump pump installed. If you have a sump pump, make sure your home owners insurance covers a sump pump problem or failure. Beware of caps on this coverage, and ad more coverage if necessary.

Normal home owners insurance will cover water damage events that originate inside the home, but not surface or ground water that enters the home. This coverage is available as a separate policy. It is called flood insurance and is underwritten by the federal government. Most insurance agents sell flood insurance. These are your options to protect you against the possible damage from flooding. Evaluate your situation and location and act quickly. There will be thousands of homes affected over the next few weeks.

Aside from permanently damaging carpet, if left alone, water can also help spread mold growth, which can cause even more damage to your property. Contact The Flood Co, today to help prevent this from happening to you. From property floods to leaks in your basement or roof, we are on your side, even when time is not.

It really is a sad tragedy when an event such as a house fire takes something that is near and dear to your heart. Family photos, memories, personal belongings, and other items could easily be taken away. And in times like these, with the recent Herriman wildfire, we are often reminded of the potential for damage fire can bring. Not only must you take into account the damage the fire itself can bring, but also soot and smoke, as well as the water it takes for the firefighters to put out the fire. And as we all know, with that water comes the potential for water and flood damage, not to mention mold damage.

Utah Fire Damage can help you to go through the process of cleanup and remediation of a house fire. Granted, Utah Fire Damage can’t really bring your lost photos or belongings back, but they can help you go through the process of calling the insurance company to see if fire damage is covered along with water and flood damage (shocking as this may seem, not all insurance companies cover both fire and water damage), emergency board-up if needed, and the fire and smoke damage cleanup process itself. Utah Fire Damage can also recommend people to you that can handle water and mold removal services if need be to remove and eliminate the threat of mold as well as any standing water remaining.

Just know that Utah Fire Damage is here and can help in times when a house fire takes over your home.

(Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families that lost their homes in the Herriman wildfire this past weekend. You are in our hearts and our prayers.)
